2009 Zone 30 & 31 Institute
The Tulsa Marriott Southern Hills in Tulsa, OK, was the site of this year’s Zone Institute for Zones 30 and 31. Hundreds of Rotarians from 12 states descended upon Tulsa including 15 Rotarians and spouses from District 6880. The theme for the institute was Round ‘Em Up and Bring ‘Em in! Be sure to see the October Newsletter for more info!
DGE Joe Saloom and DGN Tom Mann received training for their year as governor; DG Carol Franks attended the informational sessions for current DGs; Jim Golson attended Train the Trainer sessions; PDGs Mickey Parish, Richard Bollinger, Robert Greer, Bob Kelley and Wade Drinkard all served as presenters. (Also, PDG Shawn Asmuth did a great deal of work with the planning committee beforehand, but was unable to attend.) Many interesting sessions were held including Council on Legislation, polio updates, health and hunger, membership development, literacy, water, Rotary’s public image, leadership development, recruitment and retention, Rotary’s Future Vision Plan, disease prevention and treatment, and the Rotary Foundation. It was not all work and no play for Rotarians! The annual Class Reunion dinner was held on Thursday night when all DGs wear their class jackets and are introduced by the year they served as District Governor. This is always a lot of fun to see what the jackets looked like in years past and to see if they still fit! Since we had a “cowboy” theme, we were allowed to wear jeans! Friday night was an optional evening at the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame – “An Evening with Cole Porter”. Saturday night was our formal evening complete with ball gowns and tuxedos, and the introduction of the DG Class of 2010 – 2011. It was a terrific week of fellowship with Rotarians and we look forward to next year’s meeting in Nashville, Tennessee.
