Handover Ceremony of Hydroponics Station in Ban Tin Deng

MG 5267

On the 26 January, 2006 our Charter President and Project Chairman Peter Thorand , Rotarian Erwin Rohner and Rotarian Bob Denzel traveled to Phuket for the hand over ceremony for the MG 55267 Project with the RC of Auburn Alabama.

They where welcomed on their arrival in Phuket by the members of the Poseidon CruisAiders , the organization Cp peter choose to help and supervise the project construction and the training seminar.

We like to point out here that CrusAider are a local dive shop with 25 years of operation and with knowledge of the area and the people, They are and highly recommended for their part in charity work in the area. CP Peter selected them since he feels that he could trust them to follow his instructions.

We traveled from the Airport 120 km on a way which lead us back to the mainland and then up country to the Ban Tin Deng. The area has a few fisherman and the 20 or so Families in this town make a living from fishing and fish farming. The tsunami destroyed all fish farms and the government only gave a little money to all , which was not nave to rebuilt the business or sustain the families for a long time which is needed to rebuilt this industry.

On Arrival in town we where greeted by the families and taken to the Hydroponics set up . The place looks greet , and we could see that they have interest in this business and trying to make it go. They informed us that the seedling they planted where all eaten by ants. CP Peter then told them that they need to spry a pesticide first on the ground and let this try , this way this problem is solved. This are the growing pains and they where sure that they will muster them and have started to plant aging seedlings.

CP Peter the gave them a speech which was translated in to the southern dialect of this to the Family members present. Amongst the info he gave them was that we will monitor them true our friend the CruisAiders and make sure that everything will go the proper way and problems can be solved. He also told them that in 3 months he will drop by again for a look and to se the progress made.

They in return gave us the promise deep from their hearths that they will not disappoint us and that they have to make a living from this, since this is all they have now.

Rotarian Erwin Rohmer presented a club banner and told them to take good of this since this is what gave them a new start in live namely the rotary spirit to Service above Self from the two Clubs involved our and the RC of Auburn in Alabama USA.

Rotarian Bob handed them some more seeds all in all around 4000 Salad seeds and 400 tomato and cucumber seeds, this was to make up for the lose occurred true the ants.

We then visited the beach to see for our self the damage or if there where any fish farms being rebuild , only to find a mess as they told us.

We then traveled back and arrived at our Hotel at around 19:30 refreshed us . the car was waiting to take us to the residence of the owner of the Poseidon Dive Shop, which was a other 20 minute trip.

At his residence Kuhn Clause welcomed every one again and handed out the refreshment every one was seeking all day "a cold beer". CP the told him that we have still a little business to contact He thanked his team of volunteers for the great help they have been and presented him and his team a Certificate of Appreciation , from the other two visiting Rotarians he received a Club Banner and a Rotary Beermug with the 4 way test engraved in it.

He in return thanked the members of the RC TAksin Pattaya and told them to forward his sincerely "Thank You" in behalf of the 5 Families to every Rotary Club President and members which made this project possible.

Then every one moved to the with fresh food overflowing table and enjoyed the great hospitality.

Many stories where told, new bonds where made and around midnight we called it the day and left for our hotel to return the next morning to Pattaya.

The Rotary Club of Taksin Pattaya the RC of Auburn Alabama reached out and gave a hand in the

spirit of Service above Self . We accomplished to give the people the tools to catch the fish and not the fish so to speak , We are all true Rotarians and can be proud of this.

Again a "Big Thank You" to the President and all members of the RC of Auburn Alabama which made this project come true.
