Recognizing those who serve Rotary International, the District and their Clubs with Service Above Self
The Service Above Self-Unsung Hero Award was established in 2004 by District Governor Robert C. Rudder (2003-04). He established the award to recognize the efforts of Rotarians in District 6880 who serve their community and/or Rotary Club for years, "in the trenches", with little or no fanfare. Governor Bob understood the invaluable contributions provided by these "anonymous" workers toward the success in attaining the goals and ideals of the district as expressed in Rotary International's Motto - Service Above Self .
Rotarian of the Year Award
Each year, many Rotary Clubs set apart an outstanding member with a Rotarian of the Year Award. If your club does so, please provide the District Awards Committee the name of your award winner, and a little background information, so that we may recognize him or her during a special ceremony in Montgomery. Additionally, a list of all District 6880 Rotarian of the Year Award winners will be published in the June issue of the District Governor's Newsletter
The Harry P. Hall Meritorious Award was established in 1981 by District Governor Charles H. Chapman (1981-82), and 1977 Charter President of the Rotary Club of Dothan-Houston County. His purpose in beginning the award was to recognize Rotarians in District 688 (now 6880) who exemplify the motto of Rotary International in a distinguished and significant manner. Governor Charles chose to name the award for Past District Governor Harry P. Hall (1941-42), a member of the Rotary Club of Dothan. At the time DG Harry served as governor, the district number was 164, and it covered the entire state of Alabama. The first motto of Rotary International, He Profits Most Who Serves Best , was approved at the second Rotary Convention in August 1911. DG Charles recognized PDG Harry's commitment to the ideals of Rotary as expressed in the motto. [It was not until 1989 that Service Above Self was established as the principal motto of Rotary.] The Harry P. Hall Meritorious Award is now recognized as the most coveted honor that District 6880 Rotarians bestow, since it exemplifies that same principal of unselfish volunteer service as expressed throughout Rotary's rich history.

Governor Bill named the award for Past District Governor Doug Barber (1996-97), a member of the Rotary Club of Foley, whose life characterized this generous spirit. The Douglas O.
